January Match Report -  Founders Cup

Saturday, January 18, 2025 - BASF, Phoenix, AZ

Larry Piercy, Match Director

Today was our Founders Cup match, rescheduled from October 2024, where it
snowed at Mormon Lake, AZ, canceling that match. Three months later, and in
early winter, we had a glorious day for shooting in the desert! The sky was sunny
and bright. There were no clouds whatsoever. The hot air balloons were up and
floating in order to witness the beautiful sunrise. The temps ranged from 52° up
to 57°, during the match, with humidity in the mid-50% range. The wind even
cooperated and was only recorded to puff from 3 mph up to a max of 7 mph, and
floated in from numerous directions. Difficult to determine from which direction,
but enough to move pellets around, and create unwanted misses.

The Founder’s Cup has been contested since 2012 and was established to
commemorate the four founding members who established the club over 30
years ago. Larry Piercy, one of those four, and currently the club president, is the
only one of the four who still actively competes. It was only fitting that he was
match director today.

We set up our usual 12 lanes / 2 targets per / 2 shots at each / 48-shot match.
We had a separate standing lane and kneeling lane, and because of it being the
Founders Cup, Larry directed that the targets be set at the upper end of the
Troyer difficulty factor for target placement based on kill zone size. It was not an
easy course (speaking from a piston shooters point of view), but with the
expertise of those shooting, it didn’t seem to matter much. Mercifully, the wind,
noted earlier, did not interfere with the scores……too much.

After the score cards were collected, it was determined that two separate shoot-
offs were needed, all in the Hunter PCP class, and to determine the Founders Cup
champion.

Kent G and Paul W tied with 45/48. The ensuing shoot-off was close, with Paul
edging Kent by 1 point, and giving third place to Paul.

Barbara P and Cole R also tied with phenomenal scores of 47/48. That shoot off
also ended up with a one-point difference, with Cole slipping past Barb, 4 to 3 and
giving Cole his second Founders Cup title.

With 18 shooters competing today, the club continues to grow and is on the verge
of surpassing 50 paid members. In addition to our 12 monthly matches, either at
Ben Avery range or our summer venue at Mormon Lake, we also have a weekly
TRAC (Tuesday Retired Airgun Challenge) match at Ben Avery range, and will be
attempting to add a benchrest match once a month to follow one of the TRAC
matches.

Our next monthly match will be on the smallbore range at Ben Avery shooting
facility on February 15, 2025. For match dates and range location, please refer to
the Calendar section of the club website.
Respectfully submitted,
Mark Kauffman
Secretary, Airgunners of Arizona, Inc.
